Toiling MidgetsToiling MidgetsToiling Midgets - From the still-warm ashes of Negative Trend and the Sleepers, the Toiling Midgets formed in late 1979 as an instrumental band with Craig Gray and Paul Hood on guitars, Tim Mooney on drums and Jonathan Henrickson on bass.In 1981 singer Ricky Williams joined the band to record 'Sea of Unrest' (Instant [Rough Trade US]) and lasted through a brief West Coast tour.By 1983 the Midgets were once again an instrumental band recording what would become ‘Dead Beats’ (released in 1984 on Jon Boshard and Joe Carducci’s Thermidor label) with new bass player Aaron Gregory and 3rd guitarist Annie Unger (Gun Club). The band split by the end of that year; Craig heading to the UK and Paul back to Seattle. In late 1989, the Midgets reformed just before the San Francisco earthquake.

Negative TrendNegative TrendNegative Trend - Negative Trend was formed in 1977 by Craig Gray and Will Shatter from the shortlived (2 gigs) band Grand Mal. After seeing Rozz break his wrist jumping over an amp singing an Iggy song at a party at Iguana studios, they decided he was there new man. Only together in this form for about 6 months, this version of NT were known for chaotic, unpredictable shows. More likely than not Rozz would be swinging from the rafters, leaping at the audience from a PA stack or generally abusing himself and the audience. The music reflected the chaos of the live show. The CD, The Miners Benefit captures this era of NT and is the only recording of that version of the band. The CD Rozz and NT is not a Negative Trend realease but a Rozz solo project. Just to clarify a couple of rumors. Rozz's last name is Rezabek, not Williams.

As far as debut albums are concerned, Power Hor is among the finest I have heard in a long, long time. These four visionaries have brought to the table a heaping helping of seriously heavy music, and I don't think anyone who eats from the table of Lesbian will go away hungry. This band is a force to be reckoned with, and reckon you shall!!" -Kyle O'Donnell, Adequacy.net "It takes stones for an all male metal band to call themselves Lesbian. But the Seattle quartet who traffic under that provocative name don't seem to be doing so for cheap outrage, but rather out of respect for an oft-beleaguered segment of society. Lesbian grind out pugnacious metal that frequently grows serpentine tendrils of prog-rock introspection and subued virtuosity.

Jace Krause and Hannah Williams met in college during a music theory class. It was three years later when they connected again, a chance encounter during a show at Seattle's famed Crocodile Cafe in 2005. After the show, they traded songs in William's apartment. He liked her voice. She liked his songs. They decided to form a band.

The band has taken many trips up and down the West Coast, where they encountered friendly hot dog vendors, 2 AM hotel hot tub break-ins, surprisingly good food in Sacramento, tons of awesome people, and a blown transmission in Santa Monica.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who plans to never grow up, named Susie. She would sing all day long. She played the piano since birth and started the violin at age 3. She grew up listening to the most beautiful music in the world. Her parents played classical music for her every day. Then, one day her brother handed her a pair of headphones and said "This is rock and roll! Shhhh, don't tell Mom & Dad!" All of a sudden, life had meaning to the little girl! Within the music was the answer to all of her questions about her future and her own place in this crazy, dangerous, fun and exciting world!

Its doors were closed shortly thereafter and remained so for the rest of the century. Almost. The last year of the 20th century found the improbable trio of words once again adorning a placard posted outside a derelict urban building, with the addendum- "No Humans Allowed." Indeed, the awkward re-inaugural movements were witnessed by a lone banana slug (Ariolimax dolichophallus)-- a suitable beginning for a group that would soon shelter Oakland California's hindmost interpreters of Anti-Humanist literature. Their incessant travels since 2001 have brought new life to the Movement.

The former singer and co-songwriter for the Michigan-based band Marzuki, (with Matt Haseltine, Sufjan Stevens and Jamie Kempkers), Shannon embarked on a solo career in 1999 when she recorded a demo ("How I Got Away") and a self-titled album. Then Shannon moved to Seattle, where she had the pleasure of working with artists such as Rosie Thomas, Damien Jurado, Denison Witmer and others. She soon burned out on the mu..sic scene and has spent the last few years tending to her family and her plants.

The sound is pop rock with heavily distorted guitars, simple bass lines and driving beats.

The MisfitsThe MisfitsThe Misfits - The band started back in August 2005 but at the time wasn't actually even a band. It began with Johnny recording in his basement by himself on all instruments and vocals which led to the release of the first album in October of 2005 entitled "How to Wake the Dead." This was only intended to a be a solo project just for the sake of Johnny wanting to get it out of his system but when his friend (x-band member Mark E. Mortal) suggested that he put together a band, he decided to do so with some of his close friends who he had grown up with and been in other bands with previously. The early stages of the band were very reminiscent of The Misfits & Samhain but as they developed as a group and as Johnny developed as a song-writer, they would eventually stray quite a bit from their roots but never completely.

Oh, please! But I am so proud of her today; especially her new record California Years. Not only does it have great songs but also it was completely fan-funded. She has helped to start a new model in the music industry -that is what she told me. I am also proud of her activism. Even as a child she was political. I remember her first song as a child was something about Watergate. She also had a hit song in 1995 about kissing a girl. Even though I was not wild about it at first it grew on me and is so much better than that "other song" with the stolen title. But since that time, she has become one of the most respected songwriters and performers around.

Formed in 2004 by a group of higher-thinking high-schoolers who wanted their peers to find meaning and camaraderie in their music, blessthefall was intent on making their post-hardcore/screamo blend a different breed that people would remember. After several gigs in the area, more than just the locals began to notice.

I got the same story as a lot of kids, older brother with a library of hiphop tapes ranging from NWA to Black Sheep (that was my shit), I would take his tapes and play them in the walkman my Aunt Gail bought me on Canal St. when I was 6 years old and just lose myself in a bunch of words I barely understood. I think I was in 8th grade when I got heavily into graffiti and started trying to write rhymes and I stress “trying to” because like most 8th graders starting to rap I was wack. I didn’t even get pussy yet at this point so what gems was I going to be dropping.

The fight has brought us to many places but with the completion of this weapon of mine I am building it will take us to even more places. Harlem and Washington Heights is home for now, but the Earth is my turf and I'll be out there fighting soon. It makes you feel as if you’ve been missing something, and of course you have. One wonders how many experiences one will miss during their short time on earth just by doing what they would normally do everyday. There is almost always somewhere that you’d rather be, whether you know it or even think it’s possible or not. I think I’ll sleep on the roof tonight. When I was a kid, I would bring my guitar, my radio, and a couple of pillows up there and watch packs of coyotes invade the neighbor’s backyards chasing rabbits. There is always so much more going on, even right next to people, than they would ever know about.

Music, film, cuisine, winemaking, useless stuff made in china by slaves who beat baby seals, and very specific forms of martial arts that are completely ineffective but appear mysterious and edgy. Among the Oak and the AshAmong the Oak and the AshAmong the Oak and the Ash - Among The Oak & Ash began with two friends looking for a change. New Yorker Josh Joplin and Nashville’s Garrison Starr were both signed to major labels when they were teenagers, and have traveled the world performing their songs. Their paths crossed on the road and they discovered a natural camaraderie born from shared experiences and over time, their friendship meandered into a musical collaboration just when they were looking to take a breath from their solo careers. Their self-titled debut, Among The Oak & Ash I (Verve Forecast), starts at the beginning. It is immersed in some of America’s oldest music – in this case Appalachian murder ballads -- and illuminates the tenacity, beauty and universality of its themes and subjects.

It's all I've really let anyone see, up to this point. But I have a wild side too. I like to bang on things and cause a ruckus every now and then. I’m a quiet person with a loud streak. I like both. This record is a testament to that.”Sudol, age 24, is the leader of A Fine Frenzy, which she introduced to the world with the 2007 album ONE CELL IN THE SEA. The project established her as one of the most talented young singers and songwriters around; it received rave reviews, was widely exposed through songs being licensed to numerous television shows, and reached Number One on Billboard’s “Heatseeker” charts.

Miles Benjamin Anthony RobinsonMiles Benjamin Anthony RobinsonMiles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, based on name alone, may sound like a president on first offing, but give his eponymous, debut album a spin and you'll soon realise a more relevant career has presented itself for this 25-year-old Brooklyn bard. This is modern music made the old-fashioned way: take ragged, soulful and completely compelling hymns for tough times, throw into the mix an impressive array of backing musicians, and just record what happens. His sophomore album is Summer of Fear, out October 20th on Saddle Creek Records. New York has been sadly lacking a proper troubadour looking at the stars while mired in the gutter--but in Miles, we have our man.

CataldoCataldoCataldo - Let's be honest. Most band bios are exercises in two things: Writing about yourself in third person and using flowery, alliterative language. When you read something like "Cataldo's moody melodies shed light on obvious song-smithing prowess," you know who's writing that shit. Me. Eric Anderson. "Cataldo" is a band name I picked because "Eric Anderson and His Friends Who Play Music Well" didn't make a sensible acronym. That's who makes the recordings, that's who plays the shows, and that's how it will remain for the foreseeable future. Sometimes I play shows by myself. Why I picked that specific name is more complicated. The Cataldo Mission is the oldest standing building in Idaho, where I was born and grew up.

Rezurex hails from Los Angeles, California, and is influenced by numerous bands and artists including the Stray Cats, The Damned, Billy Idol, The Misfits, Elvis Presley, and The Cramps. They have attracted numerous fans with their haunting lyrics and adventurous spirit. A graduate in African-American studies, she had intended to dive into the scene and continue her efforts in social change and nonprofit development. It was after her second false start in the 9-5 world that she realized that she could no longer put a job ahead of singing and performing. Fast forward to 2009, and Kaitlin has released two critically acclaimed and award-winning albums, collaborated/worked with musicians and professionals tied to GRAMMY-winning jazz, hard rock and rap recordings, brought audiences to tears and laughter coast-to-coast, and become a integral part of the San Francisco music scene. Nine N OutNine N OutNine N Out - Wednesday, June 17, 2009— Charles R. Cross Fremont Chic reviewIt's appropriate that Nine N Out title their CD Fremont Chic: This second CD seems rooted in the kind of lasting influences people associate as classic Seattle music: garage-based rock, catchy lyrics, a driving beat, and guitar solos galore. Fronted by a powerful female vocalist, this also hints at new wave, at least the kind I associate with Blondie, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Like Fremont, this CD straddles both the funky past, and a more chic and modern future.... This five-piece ensemble is a flat out refreshing change to much of Seattle's washed out indie dribble.

Furniture GirlsFurniture GirlsFurniture Girls - Furniture Girls began as a Seattle based electronic duo made up of long time friends, and troublemakers, Viking Snowcone(Nikki) and Butterfly Hambone(stayC).

The F-Girls ran into Bubba Jones (literally) and pelted him with tiny fish until he agreed to produce an EP with them. The introduction of Bubba to the duo provided an opportunity to expand the sound of the project. What began as two girls and their drum machines has morphed into a delicious stew of funky goodness with Bubba adding extra layers of bass & guitar and Thane adding live drums. Down the line, they picked up this Jim cat to slap the bass around.

The PranksThe PranksThe Pranks - "Modern Communication" lives from the enormous drive all the songs own, from a production which perfectly fits to the sound of the band, from the loud, buzzing guitars and most of all from their ability to write great, dead catchy tunes. Just listen to the album opener, "Your world falls down around you", 120 seconds of pure pop heaven, without drowning in stereotypes and sounding too sweet and you will understand what we are talking about. Who’s able to clothe a pop-tune in a tight punk-rock suit surely deserves an award. And this should definitely happen to these popmeisters, called the PRANKS, cuz what we got here is a power-pop band that like to rock. " - Screaming Apple Records

(of Mallrats fame) on guitar, and their good friend Keith D. (of Three Weeks Yesterday) on drums. When Keith left the band in 2000, the brothers were joined by Ryan G. on bass, whilst Ry took a shot at drums. After a couple shows, Steele and Ry switched instruments and recorded 2 singles - "Nitwit" and "Think of Your Happiest Thoughts." The band also produced a few home recorded cassette tapes (their self titled “The Enlows”, “Psycho Over You” and unofficial "The Morning After Tape") which were released to a limited audience.

Southern Culture on the SkidsSouthern Culture on the SkidsSouthern Culture on the Skids - can't help but be a walking, talking storybook of Southern folkways. Formed in 1985 in Chapel Hill, NC, where Miller earned an art degree at UNC, SCOTS debuted with an EP (Voodoo Beach Party). They've subsequently released seven long players: Southern Culture on the Skids (1986), Too Much Pork for Just One Fork (1990), For Lovers Only (1992), Ditch Diggin' (1994), Dirt Track Date (1995), Plastic Seat Sweat (1997) and Liquored Up and Lacquered Down (2000). Now comes Mojo Box!Raised in Henderson, NC, Miller comes by his countrified credentials honestly, as his father ran a mobile-home factory. He also spent part of his childhood in California, which explains how high-reverb surf guitar and Creedence Clearwater Revival's swamp-rock became audible influences in his writing and playing.

Five for FightingFive for FightingFive for Fighting - If every album provides snapshots of where an artist's mind at heart is at the moment, Slice, the latest offering from John Ondrasik (aka Five for Fighting), is a collection of digital jpegs and faded Polaroids. The album takes stories of friends, family and even American servicemen, and sets them to music shot through with the spirit of the great songs of his youth. It's a diary, or a blog, in which Ondrasik speaks his mind about current issues, experiences and sentiments, while setting those thoughts to piano, bass and drums.

Jason Isbell & the 400 UnitJason Isbell & the 400 UnitJason Isbell & the 400 Unit - For a comparatively brief moment in the mid-1960s, Muscle Shoals, Alabama was the unlikely epicenter of a major American songwriting renaissance. Here are some of the names: Arthur Alexander, Donnie Fritts, Eddie Hinton, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, O.C. Smith, Joe South, Tony Joe White. Toss Bobbie Gentry into that mix, on style if not geography, and the list is not complete, regardless. Style matters, for in those turbulent times these writers and their collaborators fused the vocal passion of African-American soul and gospel to an Anglo-Saxon storytelling tradition which goes back at least to Beowulf: Tough, hard, passionate, unflinching songs, unrepentant in their sense of place and direct in their stubborn Southernness.

Claudia AcunaClaudia AcunaClaudia Acuna - From Chile, Claudia Acuña knew early on that she wanted to be a singer but had no idea that she would find her way to jazz, as there were few opportunities for jazz encounters in Chile. She began by singing Chilean folk and pop music and later tried rock, fusion and opera before coming upon her first musical career model —Frank Sinatra— at age 15. After years of always improvising instead of just singing the notes on the page, Acuña finally felt at home when she heard Sinatra, Erroll Garner and then Sara Vaughan. She thought to herself: This is what I needed to find.

Driven by the rebellious intensity of wild and charismatic frontman Westin Halvorson (who also handles guitars and programming), the three piece unit is ready to blast out of the cozy confines of the Pacific Northwest with the release of their debut five-song EP Blasphaestetic. The disc’s moniker sums up Desillusion’s take on the world perfectly.

Its about a mile away from the stone cottage that he uses as a writing retreat, and the daily walk in good weather and bad is a time for thinking, for watching the sky and the birds and the deer, and for writing songs. The trees along the gravel road were planted years ago, and local legend says the cottage was built by hand in either 1916, or maybe 1940 nobody seems very sure by the folk who settled that stretch of country.
