  • Review: Seattle Music Revival (part two)

The Seattle creative sector needs to decide whether or not to grow to accommodate the considerable talent that has grown out of the Puget Sound region over the past decade. Don't get me wrong, one of the great things about this city is its people's commitment to small business, grassroots organization and By The People, For The People directives. Still, it doesn't do us much good if all of our strongest musicians, actors, artists and writers have to go somewhere else to get the attention and facilities they deserve. When it comes to music Seattle has done well enough to foster rock, but we're living in the 21st century, there's more to the modern soundscape than guitars. Our hip hop and electronic music community becomes more interesting every year. If the acts at The Seattle Music Revival are any indication, we may just be standing on a wellspring of undiscovered talent.

Hell's Half AcreHell's Half AcreHell's Half Acre - Jim made his way to Seattle after destroying Spokane in such bands as The Vampire Lezbos, and God Project. He has been a permanent staple in Wedgwood, running Wedgwood Studio for nearly 20 years. For most of those years he has been one of the pinnacle members of the rock n roll unit, Freeloader.Kevin made his way to Seattle, much to the sorrow of rock scene in Spokane. His move slated the demise of his band Water Street (once known as Take Charge), though he cut his teeth in such bands as Big Yuck Mouth, The Happy Dead Juans, and Red Summer. He has established himself as the premiere dough slinger in town. Dee made his way over to Seattle many years ago, but was a glutton for punishment and took residence back in the Lilac City.

Million Dollar NileMillion Dollar NileMillion Dollar Nile - Million Dollar Nile started like many great love affairs do - as "just friends." Dan invited his old schoolmate Matt and his neighbor Nicole to get together weekly and play bluegrass covers. The three musicians bonded over their common love of Nickel Creek, Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show, and basically anything that could be played with stringed instruments and three-part harmony. A few months later they began writing songs, and each brought their unique flavor to songwriting: Dan's catchy melodies, Nicole's poetic lyrics, and Matt's ability to capture any genre from rasta-baltic to sea shanties. They discovered a common theme in their passion for environmental issues, and now write songs about everything from energy conservation to thinking your phone is ringing in your pocket when it's not.

When you're standing in a sparsely populated music venue watching a band kick a dozen different kinds of ass, you have to ask why the crowd isn't as thick as it should be. Was it a problem with the promotion? The billing? The time or the place? In the case of The Seattle Music Revival, it was a deadly combination of all four of those things. The real shame about it is that the show featured an impressive collection of very talented artists. If anyone had actually attended, it would have been a downright legendary festival. As it stands, The Seattle Music Revival will either be considered an earnest attempt at a powerful showcase that fell short, or the event that launched a handful of cult bands.

Strong Arm SteadyStrong Arm SteadyStrong Arm Steadyis a West Coast super-group, consisting of the cream of California’s underground hip-hop scene, namely Phil the Agony, Mitchy Slick and Krondon. Over the years, Strong Arm Steady has toured relentlessly and pounded the mixtape circuit for years, independently distributing over 200,000 mixtapes worldwide. SAS has become the staple sound of the new West Coast movement.

Strong Arm Steady’s debut album, Deep Hearted, (featuring Chamillionaire, Juvenile, Black Thought of The Roots, Xzibit, Talib Kweli, Dilated Peoples, Ras Kass and more) is the culmination of years of hard work. Their never ending grind and consistent track record of creating great music shows why Strong Arm Steady is a force to be reckoned with.

    WhyWhyWhy?  -

WHY? For what? Which reason, cause or purpose? What unnamed goal?

In abstract, WHY? is the process of adapting to the business of existing. It’s the searching for something clearly unreachable, with hopes of finding small significance along the way. It’s the attempt to understand what’s really going on by observing, neither by telescope nor microscope, but by naked eye, the intimate details in the most mundane of life’s happenings. It’s the need to describe the gist of the feeling of the tiniest modicum of The Great Universal Unutterable Joke we are all always not laughing at – except when we are. WHY? is living out the set-up of that old gag over and over, until we finally reach a punch-line. Or we die and we don't.

For years as a kid, she woke up to her mom and dad ringing in Saturday and Sunday morning with anything from the Beatles' "White Album" to Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti." After several years of classical piano training, she picked up the guitar, joined a band in college and got a taste for being on stage. She moved to Seattle in 2001, hit the open mic circuit and began playing solo shows. In the summer of 2004, Betsy took a break from playing solo and played bass and keyboards for local band, Banner Barbados. After Banner Barbados ceased to exist in 2005, she began to attack her solo career with more ambition. Betsy has since worked with rhythm sections and has recently played Seattle hotspots like The Tractor Tavern, Sunset Tavern, Neumos and The High Dive.

They enjoy listening to and are inspired by artists like The Beatles, Wilco, Led Zeppelin, Elliott Smith, The Doors, and Radiohead amongst a myriad of others. The band spends their time in a dark and unfinished attic above a car repair shop. Although they all have a fondness for heat, they are forced to abstain because it blows out the power switch feeding their instruments. For four months, they have patiently sat in the attic, writing, playing, and preparing.

But what has come of the Sawyer Family, and why do people still lower their voices when speaking of them, as if they would emerge from the woods at one's back, lurking silently like sentinels guarding ancient secrets of the underworld? Except for the few cursed lunatics, those who claim to have witnessed the unearthly ritual killings at the old slaughterhouse and returned blithering idiots, drunk in the street, no one knows. And no one dares to ask these mad hillbillies, for fear they may fall into the telltale trance often associated with the sadistic family.

SatyriconSatyriconSatyricon - These days it seems that even the field of extreme metal - which by definition should be destroying boundaries instead of creating new ones - has become saturated with sub-genres, where minimal stylistic differences turn into criteria for what's hot and what's not. And stylistic in this sense doesn't even stop with music; it's as much about fashion, image and appearance. Norway's Satyricon are a rare exception to this norm – they never cared for trends, for the latest fashion in how one is supposed to present oneself and they always abhorred the tried and tested genre stereotypes. The result is a notable career, spanning eight albums that always put the music first, often as a surprise and challenge to the listener, which creates, we should all agree, a deeper satisfaction than any devotion to set formulas.

Vile Display of HumanityVile Display of HumanityVile Display of Humanity - is a band whose sound is old and new at the same time, like a 2-headed snake eating itself alive. It can’t be, but it is. The brutally raw rhythm underlies melodic lead guitar and powerful lyrics that make you wonder how something so fresh and original wasn’t created thirty years ago. Albeit hard to find bands whose sound is similar to V.D.H. you can hear heavy influence from Black Flag, The Misfits, and Choking Victim. Their sound is so completely devastating that by the end of their first album, you’ll thirst for more.

Federico AubeleFederico AubeleFederico Aubele - “It’s such a vast and huge theme, love. You can approach it in different ways,” reflects Buenos Aires-born songwriter and guitarist Federico Aubele, whose new album Amatoria will be released by ESL Music (May 19, 2009). “Love is such an important thing for every human being, whether we notice it or not. We all experience it at least once in life. It’s one of the few things, along with dying, that is guaranteed to happen to you.” Way back in 1 BC, the original Latin lover wrote the Western world’s first guide to picking up women Roman-style, Ars Amatoria, the Art of Love. Fast forward two millennia, when Aubele is swiping pages from Ovid’s playbook, by way of smoky tango bars and the sultry heyday of Mexican boleros in the 1940s, and falling hard into the acoustic yet lush Amatoria.

I say distant, because in truth, The Dehumanizers are from Seattle and didn't begin recording or performing until 1984. (Two years in a garage in Queens as a high school jam band doesn't count for much.) Three decades later, the DEHUMANIZERS are still going strong. Very strong... Named for the traditional tolling of nine low-ringing bells following the death of a man in 18th- century England, long time acquaintances Steven Hardin and Kurt Schuler began forming their tight knit friendship in 2008 while pounding out haunting melodies in a makeshift practice space in a Greenwood garage.

Through the Eyes of the DeadThrough the Eyes of the DeadThrough the Eyes of the Dead - In a time where countless bands rely on the tried and true right hand path of conventionality, convenience and commercially viable song structure, along comes South Carolina’s THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD to breathe some (arguably) much needed life into modern metal. Malice, the band’s latest effort, shows THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD showcasing a more brutal, violent and focused aural attack than many listeners may have expected.

From the past (the haunting simplicity of "Love Henry,"which Bob Dylan tells us pre-dates the Bible) to the future (the stunning emotional complexity of her song,"The Future"), the Texas-bred singer-songwriter navigates a new rock approach that is built upon the folk, blues and jazz spectors that populated her three acclaimed previous albums.

It could be said that Polvo was the guitar band of the nineties, and that sentiment still holds true today. The band truly existed on its own island, somewhere between the Eastern Indian Peninsula and the Aleutians…which left a lot of space to roam around. What’s more, Polvo was not only unique but prolific, putting out one or two releases a year during the band’s initial lifespan.

Born in the states but raised in Israel, she spent endless hours playing in the echoing sound of the bomb shelter just outside the family’s house on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. After fulfilling her mandatory military service, Kelli moved back to the US and worked to create alternate playing styles through inventive fingerwork and variant tunings, creating a unique and inimitable musical style. In Brooklyn Kelli continued to develop her unusually powerful and expressive techniques.

Sawyer Whalen and Ty Vanherweg were introduced to each other through Junior League Football when they played on the same Woodinville Falcons team. Their fathers, while watching practice one day, got to talking about their 12 year old sons’ talents. Sawyer had been playing several instruments from an early age and writing / recording since he was 6. Tyler had been taking piano lessons from the age of 7, guitar and music theory at 10, and writing songs at 11. Their dads agreed the two should get together, and soon Ty and Sawyer began jamming and writing songs. The result was a 3 piece band (the third piece being a drum machine) called “Yeah for Diversity”.

Amidst a sensory overload of canned applause, nattering samples from nu-media godheads Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, and floating on elegiac Sign O' The Times-synths, Datarock announce their arrival in the Information Age in spine-tingling, anthemic form.

Though perhaps best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit 'Pick Up the Pieces' the band's strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song-writing, stretching across several gold selling albums and multi- grammy nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records. Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six piece took the influences of their r&b heroes - people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others - and developed their own 'authentic' sound which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere.

Since their inception, they've become one of the scene's hardest working bands touring the world over and releasing the full lengths, It All Comes Down To This and 2001's critically acclaimed Give Blood, an album that breathed life into the then-stagnant hardcore scene. Returning with their first album in three years, Bane offer up The Note - an album that embodies the spirit, the community, and the love of traditional hardcore that Bane has become synonymous with.

This seems fitting, as SCAC describes their music as American (Is that not what America is and has been, a mixture of every one and thing resulting in something new?); and after a decade of working and living as SCAC, they have created their own genre. The instruments are drums, upright bass, pedal steel, banjos, piano, guitar, vocals and stories. They have recorded critically acclaimed albums (Village Voice, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle) on Jello Biafras Alternative Tentacles label. Spin Magazine and No Depression have described them as the best live band in America.

Atomic OutlawsAtomic OutlawsAtomic Outlaws - The Tacoma based Atomic Outlaws is a band with “an intense mixture of raw emotion, passion and rock ‘n roll” who is “bringing back the American dream… 3 chords at a time." What started as a strong local fan base is now spreading around the country like a pandemic; except this pandemic contains explosive guitar riffs and a high energy live show Red Bull would kill to sponsor. Consisting of Zak Eastyn on vocals, Pat and Rev on guitars, Rob Z. on bass and Double J on drums the Atomic Outlaws sound can best be described as a combination of Social Distortion and Mötley Crüe with a pinch of The Misfits. Their influences range from 1970's Punk and Classic Rock, 80's and 90's rock and AOR music to anything with great guitars and a cool melody.

But throughout a career that has taken Dallas around the world as a songwriter, singer, actor and radio deejay, he claims he's never had a real job.A native of Springfield, Missouri, Dallas began performing professionally in 1975, and by the age of 18 he had toured throughout the entire U.S. and Canada. After moving to Nashville, he further developed his vocal style singing demos for many of the top publishing houses in the music industry. While touring Europe in 1991, Dallas forged a deal with Texicalli Records in Finland and was signed to record an album.

If I Were A GladiatorIf I Were A GladiatorIf I Were a Gladiator - If I Were A Gladiator - the name says it all. Adventurous, epic, dramatic - their songs can take you through myriad emotions within minutes, caressing you one moment with introspective lyrics, then bashing your head against the wall with a deadly riff before you know what hit you. The backbone of the band is a crushing rhythm section full of massive twin-guitar assaults and groovy truckin' doublebass drumming, topped with the melodies that can only be described as soaring, courtesy of first-class metal diva Emily Ruth. Fans of classic metal with plenty of bona fide guitar heroism will not be disappointed!

The band developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in the local culture and studied and performed with luminaries. But the group has its roots in Asheville, NC, where many of its members were childhood friends and long-term musical collaborators.

Plain JanePlain JanePlain Jane - In 1999, a group of musicians moved to Nashville with the goal of making music that would inspire others. It wasn't long thereafter that they formed an alternative modern rock quartet called PLAIN JANE. Their blend of melodious driven pop/rock sounds and positive based lyrics was something new and fresh but somewhat familiar at the same time. With the help of producer Tony Palacios (acclaimed guitarist for Guardian), PLAIN JANE completed their debut album. The lineup included Jim (guitar), Greg (bass guitar), Bill (drums) and Jozi (vocals). Critics who heard early tracks clearly indicated this CD was ANYTHING BUT PLAIN. Hence a CD title was born. Soon they had tracks being played on CHR, Christian Rock Radio, Catholic Radio, Alternative Secular Radio, and Internet Radio.

Burning of IBurning of IBurning of I - got their start in early 2004, when guitarist Jacob collaborated together with drummer Tory. This was where the two of them began working out some of the ideas that Jacob had begun to write. Bassist Jesse, was invited to join in and add what he could several months after the inception. The final piece, Matt was added to the mix later that year, to bring the final element of what then became Burning of I. Almost a year of work was placed into the project, before it was unleashed on the masses. Where everyone gets to unleash, while playing to unsuspecting crowds of people... That next summer Burning of I went into the studio to record their first release, titled 'A Small Little Shack In A Big Wet Messy Nothing'. Burning of I worked diligently in support of this newly released EP, performing at venues all over the Seattle area and abroad.

It is a "generous" album (his words), and a summation of everything Lerche has learned over the last decade of making music.

Following in the unique footsteps of a Lubbock legacy started by Buddy Holly, The Flatlanders, and Terry Allen, Thrift Store Cowboys add their own modern influences and flavor to the already rich musical heritage. Their new album, Lay Low While Crawling or Creeping, was recorded at Wavelab Studios in Tucson, Arizona, and produced by Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Iron and Wine, Neko Case.) The album will be released nationally in November 2006.

Living ColourLiving ColourLiving Colour - During the 1980s, rock had become completely segregated and predictable; the opposite of the late '60s/early '70s, when such musically and ethnically varied artists as Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone, and Santana ruled the Earth. But bands such as New York's Living Colour helped break down the doors by the end of the '80s, leading to a much more open-minded musical landscape that would eventually pave the way for future bands (Rage Against the Machine, Sevendust, etc.).

Frontier RuckusFrontier RuckusFrontier Ruckus - is most usually in a perpetual state of waiting—limbo. This is an enormous place to be; it is seen clearly in the modern space of the "dead mall." It's like this, buildings and towns and counties are containers that gradually show the glowing life or death of the things within them. The existence of locality, and the connection of all the spaces or people you engulf via bodies and via breath, that expansiveness of breath, is where Frontier Ruckus resides, and it is past that county-line-frontier where knowledge and affection blur into nothing.
